A Simple Terrain Exterminator Many of our people are greatly troub led by rats and mice about their premi ses. I he following simple recipe for getting rid of them, and at the same time using a good disinfectant about the house, is highly recommended by an ex change: "We clear our premises pf this detestible vermin by making whitewash yellow with copperas, and covering the stoncS and rafters in the cellar with a thick coat fot it. In every crevicO where a rat might tread we put the crystals of the copperas, and scattered the same in the corners of the floor. The result wca perfect stampede of rats and mice 'Since that time not a squeak of either rats or mice has been heard about the house. Ever spring a coat of the same yellow wash is given to the cellar as a purifier, as well as a rat exterminator, and no typhoid dysentery, OT feTcr a!s- tacks the family." WILMINGTON, N. A fresh air fund for the benefit of the poor of St. James' Parish, is being raised and is doing much good. The Sisters at St. James' Home have . many tired and jaded mortals on their sick visiting list, who are receiving .marked benefit from the weekly excursions to the ocean. The raising of a "fresh air fund" is a very laudable object, and one which we hope will meet with the success it de serves. How many peor, tired, over worked mortals there are in this city who Can be restored to health, is a subject for you to pender over. Add your mite to the fund and try and benefit your less fortunate neighbor. The Prohibition Speeches. Notwithstanding the inclement weath er there was a large turnout last night in front pf the Opera House to hear the addresses oa Prohibition promised from Hon. D. L. Rusell and Maj , James C. McRae. The speakers were presented to the audience by Capt. N. F. Thomp. son. Maj. McRae, the President of the State Prohibition Convention, was the first to speak. JN or wood Giles moved, and it was carried, that the action of the Board o Aldermen relative to the establishment of a hospital be approved, and that the yearly expenditure on the part of the city for the maintenance of said hospita shall not exceed $1,000. Mr. Giles explained his motion by pre seating an estimate made Dn. Lane and Wood for yearly expenditure, showing a sum of $1,886 as ample for the average care of twelve patients throughout the year, as loiio ws : Twelve patients, at 30 cts. per day, $3.60 . . . .$1,314 Cooking and washing, $10 per month . . . . 120 Steward and nurse . . . 120 Medicine . . . . . - 50 Superintendent . . . 300 $1,904 This amount, they say, will be consid erably lessened by pay patients. It shouldibe understood that, in accord nace Witn law, me city is io pay iwo- . m m -A A fifths, or $761 60 as estimated above, for the maintenance of the hospital, and the county three-fifths, or $1,142.40, so it will be seen that the appropriation of $1,000 wiU be amply sufficient to cover all estimated expenses and allow a fair margin for nnforseen emergencies, should any arise. , Quarterly Meetings.
